– HSR’s Open-Wheel Divisions Make a Quick Return to the Spotlight at The Glen after Successful Doubleheaders at Last Month’s HSR The Mitty Presented by Hagerty
– Second of Season’s Pair of Grand Prix Classics Featured Run Group Races in a Collaboration Between HSR and Monoposto Racing Supports the Legacy of “Single-Seater” Open-Wheel Road Racing
WATKINS GLEN, New York (May 21, 2026) – Fast off an exciting Featured Run Group race engagement at last month’s 48th HSR The Mitty presented by Hagerty, Monoposto Racing and Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) continue with this season’s pair of collaborative HSR Grand Prix Classics doubleheaders at the HSR Watkins Glen Historics in June.
The full schedule of HSR season-championship races at the HSR Watkins Glen Historics, June 11 – 14, co-headline the jam-packed weekend at Watkins Glen International that also features Saturday’s fourth running of the HSR Watkins Glen Classic 6 Hour presented by Mission Foods.
Showcasing “single-seater” machines from the last half century and beyond, Monoposto Racing – led by race-winning and Champion HSR Competitor Travis Engen – shares with HSR a common passion to preserve, celebrate and bolster the heritage of North American open-wheel road racing. The HSR Grand Prix Classics division (formerly HSR Group 4) is home to everything from classic Formula Vees up to modern-day Indy cars retired from contemporary competition.
Among the wide array of open-wheel cars making it to victory lane at The Mitty were a March Super Vee, Brabham BT29 and BT36 models, a Reynard 90SF FC, a Lola T342 FF and the later Lola T97/20 Indy Lights, a DP01/09 Indy car and even a Ferrari A1/GP that was raced internationally in its prime nearly 20 years ago. Grand Prix Classics is also where you will find Formula Junior, Historic and Club Fords, Formula B/Formula 2 cars, Atlantic cars, such as the March 80A, and much more.

Within HSR Grand Prix Classics, smaller open wheelers are in Group 4A/B while their larger, single-seater cousins are in Group 4C.
Both HSR and Monoposto are fully committed to building on the popularity of historic open wheel road racing, both on and off the track. Engen and HSR President John Doonan are doing everything they and their respective racing organizations can to reinvigorate the single-seater Grand Prix Classics division.
Tom Fraehlic swept the Grand Prix Classics Group 4B races at The Mitty in his No. 10 Wayne Brown Racing 1979 March Super Vee, returning to HSR competition with the promise of an expanded Grand Prix Classics field and a personal invitation from Doonan.
“I did it for 20 consecutive years, then I stopped in 2023 because we just didn’t have many cars in the class,” Fraehlic said. “I was out there running with Sports Racers and Porsches and who knows what. Then John reached out to us and said, ‘Hey, come on back!’ I appreciate that. It was very kind of him, and I’d like to think we can get more to come out.”
After an unofficial test day on Thursday, June 11, and practice and qualifying for all Watkins Glen Historics and Classic 6 Hour run groups on Friday, June 12, racing begins on Saturday, June 13, at The Glen after final qualifying rounds that morning. The Grand Prix Classics twin bill of races take place in a pair of same-day doubleheader sprints on Sunday, June 14.

Grand Prix Classics Groups 4A/B race Sunday at 8:25 a.m. and 2:55 p.m. EDT while Group 4C rolls off at 9:20 a.m. and 4:55 p.m. EDT.
Next up on the HSR schedule is indeed the fourth running of the HSR Watkins Glen Classic 6 Hour presented by Mission Foods and the accompanying Watkins Glen Historics, June 11 – 14.
