Stacey Schepens’ Morgan 4/4 – “A Member of The Family”

For HSR member Stacey Schepens, a race weekend isn’t just another stop on the calendar. It’s something far more personal, carried through the enduring presence of her
family’s 1964 No. 241 Morgan 4/4.

A fixture in the HSR paddock for decades, the iconic Morgan represents far more than vintage machinery. It stands as a rare example of continuity in historic racing, having remained in the same family for more than 30 years while continuing to compete at a high level.

“It’s an amazing experience,” Schepens said. “I always feel honored to drive the car, but the car has been in our family for over 30 years. I know, it’s crazy to think that. My
brother raced it for a couple of years. My dad raced it for about 10, and I’ve been racing it for the last 20 years. So, it’s really a member of the family.”

Schepens is the daughter of longtime HSR competitor and fellow Morgan racer “Super Dave” Bondon who retired from driving in 2022 at the 44th HSR The Mitty, during which he served as the event’s Grand Marshal.

“My dad started racing with HSR before I was doing any racing, so you know, HSR is in my blood,” Schepens said. “You can see some stickers on the Morgan from the early 2000s.”

The Morgan has been rooted in racing from the start.

“Whoever purchased it originally in the early 1960s turned it immediately into an SCCA car,” Schepens said. “So, it’s always been a race car. That person sold it to a good
friend of ours and we bought it from him 30 years ago. It’s odd for something that old to think that we’re only its third owners! My Dad passed it on to me in the late 1990s, so ever since then, I’ve been driving that car. Even though it’s a production car, everything in it is as racy as it can be, and it’s got that great Lotus Twin Cam engine in it.”

With HSR set to celebrate its 50 th Silver Anniversary season next year, Schepens is aware that she and her family – including the Morgan – have been there for the majority of it.

“When I think about that Morgan, that car has been with HSR all of those years after HSR started in the 1970s,” Schepens said. “I think it’s really important that people
remember that vintage racing really used to be like a grassroots movement. You look now at all of these fabulous haulers, and all of these great cars, and they are so cool. Don’t get me wrong, I love, love going around and seeing them. But all HSR used to be for me was a father and a daughter with their car in a trailer, rolling it out and driving together. It was always a family affair right from the beginning.”

Next up on the HSR schedule is the fourth running of the HSR Watkins Glen Classic 6 Hour presented by Mission Foods and the accompanying Watkins Glen Historics
